Been to the land of faery….

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

Now I am back.  Wow. Fast and furious flies the time–100 years have come and gone.

Happy Celtic Bramble* Month!

“O, blackberry tart, with berries as big as your thumb, purple and black, and thick with juice, and a crust to endear them that will go to cream in your mouth, and both passing down with such a taste that will make you close your eyes and wish you might live forever in the wideness of that rich moment.”
~Richard Llewllyn (How Green Was My Valley)

A busy month for faeries!

It is fitting that September is the month of the snagging vine. There seems to be so many things pulling at my sleeves all at the same time.  Should I go toward that pull or maybe this one…a thousand tinny tugs that can ensnare you in inertia.  I feel like St. Anthony Tormented by the Demons, (etching by Martin Schongauer,ca.1480-90 ca.1480-90)  But if you can free yourself, and you are very careful, the sweet berries are you reward.  And I am certain they are made more delicious because of the battle you must wage against their thorny vine.
But September is a time to stand in the balance. To hold both the night and the day in equal measure–the yin and the yang, the celestial balance of light upon the hemispheres.  Bask in the late summer’s sun. Harvest the fruits of your labor, fill the stores with your bounty for Mabon, the celebration of the Autumnal Equinox on the 23, will mark the slide to Hades and the barren darkness of winter. Let the cold begin.

THE VINE OR Bramble: The Equalizer
September 2 – September 29
Vine signs are born within the autumnal equinox, which makes your personality changeable and unpredictable. You can be full of contradictions, and are often indecisive. But this is because you can see both sides of the story, and empathize with each equally. It is hard for you to pick sides because you can see the good points on each end. There are, however, areas in your life that you are quite sure about. These include the finer things of life like food, wine, music, and art. You have very distinctive taste, and are a connoisseur of refinement. Luxury agrees with you, and under good conditions you have a Midas touch for turning drab into dramatic beauty. You are charming, elegant, and maintain a level of class that wins you esteem from a large fan base. Indeed, you often find yourself in public places where others can admire your classic style and poise. Vine signs pair well with Willow and Hazel signs.

Happy Hazel Tree Month

Tuesday, August 16th, 2011

With all the excitement about the new calendar I forgot to honor the Hazel Tree and those of you who are born during her month! If you were born between August 5 and September 1 you were born in the Celtic month of the Hazel Tree.  You are the “knower.” Happy Birthday!

Faery Calendar August 2011

What a month of celebrations!

Hazel – The Knower

If you are born under the energy of the Hazel, you are highly intelligent, organized and efficient. Like the Holly, you are naturally gifted in academia, and excel in the classroom. You also have the ability to retain information and can recall, recite and expound on subjects you’ve memorized with amazing accuracy. You know your facts, and you are always well informed. This sometimes makes you appear like a know-it-all to others, but you can’t help that; you’re genuinely smart and usually know the right course of action because of your impressive knowledge base. You have an eye for detail, and like things to be “just so.” Sometimes this need for order and control can lead to compulsive behaviors if left unchecked. You have a knack for numbers, science and things that utilize your analytical skills. You like rules, although you are typically making them rather than playing by them. The Celtic tree astrology sign of Hazel joins harmoniously with Hawthorn and Rowan’s.

August is also the beginning of the harvest celebrations (see earlier post on Lammas) in the Northern Hemisphere.  Enjoy the last whisper of sun before winter sets in for the long dark months.

First Midsummer Faeries

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

the first little faeries of the summer

Our 2011 Faery Festival was wonderful; the yard was full of faeries flitting about enjoying the day.  We had so many come to the festival that we may have to move it to a much larger place!

This little elf and faery stopped for a moment to let me take their photograph.  When I developed the image, I saw that two more faeries had joined them in the garden, can you see them?   I am always surprised that they are clearly there in the photograph, but were completely invisible to me when I snapped the photo.  Can you see them?  I’ll show you!

Faery in the background

This is the beautiful faery sitting quietly in the background...

I did not add her or draw her or did anything but develop the image with my usual technique… is it magic?

He seems like a joyful little elf…

Not every Fine Art Faery Portrait reveals the faeries that are in my garden, but  most do… It’s so much fun to find them!

I’ve done it, I’ve tricked the trolls!

Tuesday, January 4th, 2011

I don’t know if you’ve had this problem with your blog site, but I was swamped with unsavory comments from all over the world.  An army of robo-trolls were sending vile spam through my comment form.  It was maddening.  But I found a plug-in to out smart those unsavory trolling spammers:  NuCaptcha. It’s great!  If you are having the same spam-troll infestation, get the plug-in.  You can test it by writing a comment to this post, see how it works? It’s awesome.   FAERY BLESSING TO THEM ALL!

Ahh…the faeries, yesterday I received a request for another Fine Art Faery Portrait.  I love it so much that I’m adding it to the finalist folder for the 2013 calendar!  She is the sweetest little flower faery, don’t you think?

Getting ready for the holidays

Saturday, October 16th, 2010

I just packaged 13 boxes of faery cards.  Each box has 13 cards of the faeries from my 2011 Faery Calendar.  They are sparkled for the holidays.  Each card has a faery blessing represented by the flower faery on the card.  I’m only selling 13 sets. Talk about a limited edition!  They are wrapped with a handmade paper belly band, and tied with grass.   I’m selling them for $39.00 a box.  (The cards I sell for $3.50 each) The cards are on heavy recycled stock, and have glitter embellishments.  You can only purchase them here on line, or at FaerieCon in November, or at the Waldorf School Holiday Event in November. (email me if you want more information)

The boxes have different paper belly bands, no two boxes are alike.

Faery Doll Sculpture by Michele Barrow-Belisle

I simply suggested that I might start making dolls two days ago and today one of my favorite doll artists has emailed me!  I’ve never met her before, she lives in Canada… and there in my email box is a note.  While I am writing back, Tom walks in and tells me someone is on the phone asking me if I’d like to exhibit my faery works… and another called wanting to sell my calendars and asked if I had any other products… did they know that I spent today sketching product ideas?  It’s like my faery godmother is peeking over my shoulder and making people work for me! “Lets work it people, work it!”  And I just realized I’ve been humming Sarah McLachlan’s – Ordinary Miracle. I heard the song on Michele Barrow-Belisle’s blog earlier today.  I just love it when the stars align. Give yourself a big fat hug from the universe.  I got mine today!

Support our 2011 Faery Festival, buy a calendar today!

SUPPORT OUR FAERY FESTIVAL FUNDRAISER, Buy our calendar!

Each year we create a magical faery festival that is free and open to the public.  We offer faery portraits to help raise money for Cape Ann Habitat for Humanity.  The cost of the event has been growing so I decided to sell faery calendars to generate the money needed to host our festival.  My 2011 Faery Calendar is the most beautiful and child friendly faery calendar on the market– that alone is reason enough to buy one for yourself and to purchase several for gifts.  The added incentive is that the profits go toward the cost of our 2011 Faery festival in June.  You can purchase the calendars through this site, or through our studio (if you are local), or one of the many local stores, or on line through Amazon.

The faeries in our calendar. Magic every month!

If we sell all (900) of our calendars this year I will be able to print the 2012 Faery Calendar…and it is stunning. (I’ve just selected the 14 faeries for the calendar AND designed the cover and back)  I’ll give you a sneak-peek in September.  Calendar Co. in Australia has their eye on the 2012 Calendar…an international market…how cool would that be?  But first thing’s first….the 2011 Faery Calendar would make a beautiful gift, you’ll never miss a holiday, including the faery holidays, so you will always know when to party!

Faery Blessings.

Chasing Faeries

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

It’s a beautiful morning to chase faeries.  It rained last night and the last drops are clinging to all the blossoms in my garden.

“A perfect time to look for faeries. ”

Whenever I leave my house with this thought it heightens my visual perception. Suddenly everything that is ordinary becomes sharp, bright, and more effervescent.   The world sparkles and crackles with magic.  I am able to see things that I would completely overlook any other morning I go out for a walk.

Chasing faeries makes me SEE my surroundings.  I stop thinking bills. I stop thinking ‘will the gulf survive the oil spill’ and other pressing matters.  Instead I concentrate on the flash of light or movement out of the corner of my eye and try to see what caused it.  A freshly rained upon morning joyously tosses the light around.

And what did I see and what did I find?

I saw a humming bird in the tree next to my house.  It startled me with the speed it zipped away.  I saw a butterfly bouncing through the garden, jumping from flower to flower with no time to stop for a how-do-you-do.  And under the fat purple hydrangea blossoms a little snail clung to the edge of a leaf drinking from a river of raindrops collected in the ridges.

What did I find?  Well, under the hydrangeas I found a little faery with a broken wing riding home on the back of a snail.

Good speed little faery!

“A perfect time to look for faeries” is my mantra to clear my head so that I can appreciate the moment.  Find one that works for you.  Or you can use mine.  Try chasing faeries on the morning you find the garden wet from a midnight rain.  Share with me what you see and show me what you have found.  Better yet, share the adventure with a friend or child.  Children are very attuned to faeries, they can help!

Enjoy the day, the sun is out and the lake is calling.

Faery Blessings
