Underwood Faery Festival
I do not know what inspired me to start on this journey, but I suspect the faeries had something to do with it. In 2003 we hosted the first faery tea at our studio in Essex, we had about 50 little ones come to the festival to have their portrait’s taken and to play games, build faery houses, and have tea. Over the 8 years we have had the festival attendance has grown to over 500 children running about the yard which has forced us to begin a search for a larger place to host our festival.
(Please return to this page for updated information next spring. We have our eyes on the lake down the street…but we’ll see!)
The festival is held every year on the third Saturday in June (father’s day weekend). We open our doors at 9:30 and close the festival at 2:30. (This may change if we move to a new location.) We have a story teller, arts and crafts, faery ring dancing, quiet story tents, and of course, our Faery Tea under the main tent. During the festival we raise money for Cape Ann Habitat for Humanity by selling faery portrait packages. My faery portraits have won awards and have been licensed by Avalanche for a 2012 Faery Calendar. This festival offers the ‘best buy’ opportunity for parents to own an original fine art faery portrait by me.
If you want to be put on our mailing list for the festival please leave your name and email address in the comments field on this page. It is important to sign up for information about our 2012 faery festival because we are pretty sure it will not be held at our studio, but moved to a larger location with more parking, more entertainment, and more fun. We may be lengthening the festival to two days and longer hours. We are also considering adding a goblin market (with artists who create children and faery related products.) The focus of our festival will remain on children and their experience of faery. There are several wonderful fairy festivals around the country, but ours is the longest running festival that is entirely child focused and child friendly.
Here is a film of our 2010 festival created by Stephen Underwood.
